How do I support myself?

It’s not easy to live with mental illness. It’s a recurring issue with no obvious solution. While medications and psychotherapy can be quite beneficial, persons with mental illnesses sometimes need to do more on a daily basis to feel good or even just be okay.

Exercise, meditation, prayer, change in diet, and being more present are some frequent self-help tips that are beneficial and effective for many people. However, it is not always effective due to other factors that influence life choices. Here are a few quick and easy tips that could be incorporated in a daily routine.

1. self-care

Treat yourself with kindness, patience, and most importantly giving yourself grace. Take care of yourself by respecting yourself mentally and physically. Positive self-talk and validating your feelings is the perfect way in starting the day. Make yourself a priority by scheduling time for your favorite hobbies, and interests, spending time with yourself or widen your horizons with self exploration. Some fun and new hobbies can consist of learning how to garden, taking dance lessons, or learning a new language to be utilized on travel.

2. Physical health and healthy habits

Physical activity can assist with decreasing depression and anxiety. Being mindful that certain foods that are consumed do alter our mental wellbeing, that can also affect physical and mental motivation.

A healthy digestive system is also key as well. Drinking plenty of water is essential to assist the body in eliminating toxins out of the body. Smoking or vaping can alter the mental and physical state, but cause lasting effects that shorten your life.

3. Relaxation and Down time

Grounding yourself in activities that allow you to relax and stay in the moment. Relaxing, vacations, rest, and quietness are some ways to assist with relating. Here are a few more:

  • Mediating 15-20 minutes a day to quiet the mind and body

  • Going to your favorite place and indulge in self-care

  • Spa day

  • Quarterly vacations to destress from work

  • Journaling your thoughts to calm your mind

  • Lastly, permit yourself to do these things without feeling pressured.

4. Seeking assistance

Yes, it can be hard to seek assistance, but it shows how strong you are to take care of yourself. Physical and mental treatment is vital at times. It can also be life-changing for the better. So, make your mental and physical health a priority because your body, mind, and loved ones will thank you.

Now, it's time to be living and not existing. Let’s begin the journey to a healthier and happier life.
